This course tasked us with designing a ‘well-tailored suit’ of an informational book about fifteen typefaces that have changed the world. Additionally, we created a type specimen the fifteenth typeface, which was of our own choosing. The letter Os on the cover represent the ‘world’, and are embossed to create a difference in depth from the title text.
The book and specimen are similar in typeface and colour but are also meant to contrast each other with tortoiseshell binding compared to a Fifteen Typefaces book with a more Western feel and binding style.
The typeface specimen features ‘Gotong-Royong’, which means community spirit in Indonesia. The typeface was made by Malaysians to capture Malaysian culture in this decade, 2020. Different designers designed different letters, and each was assigned a theme like food, language, and architecture.
I themed the specimen on food, because the funds raised from the typeface launch were donated to food banks, so there are graphic elements like round biscuits and food-ish colours like yellow and red.
Both books are tied by the blue and green colours which reflect theirnformative tone.
